A Note from Doc Good summer to you all. We have been incredibly busy here with change. Some of you have been through by now and observed our technology use in the operatories and continued at the front desk. Staff changed with the addition of Melissa and we have shifted the infield with Tia and Jody helping us know where we should be at all times. I have been the one holding this newsletter up by not getting my column. Apologies!
My thought line comes from observing my mother´s picnic table on her back porch. I watched her set the table countless times. She set it for the family and for guests. She always set it with the proper placement, attention to arrangement and appearance, and always a never failing love for the people who graced the table. I saw this and felt this is what we do for our friends who come to see us. I truly feel this way every day in that I must prepare a table for you to be comfortable. All of those basics I observed for company hold true in how we approach your visits. Do you need to sit and be listened to? Do you need to share and receive comfort? Or maybe to laugh and cry? You all know how powerful the reaction of “going to the dentist” entails for most folks. Our lives here center on keeping you as comfortable as possible, as safe as necessary, so you might of all things be able to enjoy your visits. We set our table deliberately. We set it with passion. Passion for your lives, passion for what we do and are blessed to provide all of you. There is a reason we all come together at the table during certain times. We wish to share that with you. It requires honesty, vulnerability and an openness to share. Dentistry without the depth is just the opposite. Fast food relationships with fast food quality. This is not for us. We live the opposite of that. Yes the old way was and still is the best way. Technology be darned, it must be tethered to the values shared at the table. Our best effort is then a joy to serve you with what we have trained and learned our whole professional and personal lives. It is served at our table with great care, to you, with the best of intentions for all of you. Thank you for sitting with us. Best to you, Doc Office HoursStarting August 17th Monday - 9:00 to 5:30 Tuesday - 9:00 to 4:00 Wednesday - 9:00 to 5:30 Thursday - 7:30 to 7:00 We love learning!Dr. John and the staff are going to the Academy of General Dentistry´s annual meeting in Baltimore, Maryland in July. We are all going to different courses and will bring back to the table what each of us has learned. Each and every one of us loves to learn new things and refresh ourselves on old things. We are constantly striving to improve our dentistry and our lives to serve you better. Tia Think Green!A recent study found that drinking green tea may improve oral health. People who drank green tea on a regular basis had better periodontal health than those who did not. Green tea contains an antioxidant called catechin that may reduce inflammation. Feeling stressed? Getting out of a man-made environment and spending as little as 15 minutes in a green space such as a park, a garden or just your own backyard can trigger a response in the brain that makes you feel calmer and more positive. Enjoying green spaces may also lower blood pressure, heart rate and muscle tension. Sharon URGENT - URGENT - URGENT1. As you all know, I love great summer foods for all the picnics/parties we host and it helps if they are easy to prepare. I love this time of year due to all of the local fresh fruits and vegetables available to us. This yummy summer salad uses vine ripened tomatoes and what a better place to get tomatoes but good old Lancaster County. I hope you all enjoy this great salad. Have a fun summer all. A few of the topics were Endodontics, Esthetics, and classes on how to add an associate to your practice. The green egg is up and running year round! Grilling doesn´t get any better than this according to doc. He attended the "Egg Fest" in Reading and learned even more about the Egg. July will bring a week of family time in the Outer Banks for summer vacation. Tia - St. John was the destination for Tia, Shawn and their friends in May. They had a great time while Hank also had a great time at camp Max. Ten years of marriage, a remodeled pool house, a trip to the Smokey Mountains in July, 13 years working with Doc and a trip to Vieques in September, what more could you ask for out of life. Gini - Gini and family hosted camp Max for Hank in May. Kyle will be a junior in college this fall, Kevin a senior at Cocalico, and Miranda an eighth grader. For Mother´s Day Gini had the gift of love given to her with a trip to Ireland over the winter holidays. Char - In May Char and family spent a day at Hershey Park and had a great time riding the coasters. For summer vacation they will be spending a week at the beach and going on weekend camping trips. Nick will be starting kindergarten this fall in the Warwick School District. Sharon - The twins are doing great with Kelsey playing middle school varsity soccer and Kirstin doing her dance recital in May. The family will be spending the July 4th holiday in Washington D.C. and their summer vacation in Stone Harbor, NJ. Sharon hosted a 13th birthday party for the girls in June and a good time was had by all, including the dog. Melissa - Please welcome Melissa to the office. We are sure you will find her positive energy and friendliness welcoming. Mel lives in Denver with her husband and two children, Kaleb and Alyce. Her husband Matt is a teacher at Penn Manor. This summer vacation will be spent in Chincoteaque and in Michigan, where she grew up in Detroit. Jody - Sadly, Karen decided in February that her life was taking a different path and is not here anymore. She is helping her parents and others who are in need of help. We all thank her for 10 years of great service to all of us and we miss her a lot. So it is with mixed emotions that I take over the “gossip” column for her. Now a bit about myself. Zach is living in Pittsburgh and Hannah will be a junior at Elizabethtown College this fall. A weekend in Pittsburgh in February to visit Zach with a bunch of girlfriends and a weekend at the Lake house in May were on the agenda this year. I spent my birthday in May with Zach and Hannah at the Springsteen concert in Hershey and it was awesome. This summer we will once again do our annual trip to the Outer Banks with family for a week of relaxation and fun! MI PasteI am excited to share with you a new product to our office. The product is MI paste with Recaldent. The purpose of this product is to provide minerals to tooth enamel in areas where the enamel has been weakened. White or brown areas appear on the surface of the tooth where vital minerals are lacking. These spots can be caused by a disruption in the development of the enamel, called hypocalcification. When a permanent tooth erupts and it had this disruption it will appear as a white spot. Loss of minerals may also be a reason for pre-carious lesions, or the early stages of a cavity. We often see these spots following orthodontic treatment, excessive sugar intake (Mountain Dew mouth), periods of dry mouth (xerostomia), or periods of excessive vomiting (bulemia or pregnancy morning sickness). Sensitivity is yet another reason to use MI paste. Exposed root surfaces due to gum recession, sensitivity following whitening procedures, or enamel erosion from over zealous brushing are a few reasons excessive sensitivity may occur. We may mention this new procedure at your next dental exam. If you are interested in more information, please bring your questions along to your next appointment. The results we are seeing are great and we are anxious to help you with this new product in our office. It´s been great to find an alternative to "drill and fill" for the above mentioned conditions.
