National Children’s Oral Health Month

During the month of February, the American Dental Association celebrates National Children’s Oral Health Month. Oral health care should begin at birth to help your child enjoy a healthy smile for life. Lititz, PA family dentists Dr. John Gotwalt and Dr. Sara Gotwalt provide oral care for all stages of life.

Beating Childhood Cavities

You may think that sharing your toothbrush or eating utensils with your baby is harmless. This may not be the case. The American Dental Association recommends parents never share anything with their children that has been in your mouth. Your mouth is full of germs and bacteria that can cause cavities. Always provide your child with their own set of utensils and their own toothbrush to avoid spreading cavity causing bacteria.

Childhood cavities are more common than you may expect. Oral health care needs to start from the moment your baby first comes into the world. Even milk has sugars in it and left sitting on the gums can begin causing decay in the teeth lying underneath the gums. To set your baby up for a lifetime of healthy smiles, be sure to wipe off their gums after nursing.

Slideshow-fluoridetoothpasteIntroducing fluoride into your child’s routine is another way to help fight childhood cavities. Many townships add fluoride to the public water. Fluoride exposure helps strengthen the enamel on your children’s teeth and can prevent cavity development. Brushing your child’s teeth with fluoride toothpaste is also recommended. If you have questions about the type or amount of fluoride toothpaste that is safe for your child our dental care team will be happy to answer your questions at your next dentist office visit.

Once the first tooth erupts it is time to visit our Lititz dental care team. Our compassionate and dedicated staff will help build a positive dentist-patient relationship with your child. Early life visits to the dentist can help our dentists keep track of your child’s oral health development and can make coming to the dentist an enjoyable experience for your child. Our staff will help educate your child as they grow about the importance of proper oral hygiene as we help to keep their smiles clean and healthy to avoid the need for complex procedures.
